about

Narcissus at the Muddy Banks is a composition in three movements for string ensemble, modulated field recordings, and synthesizers. Originally released in January 2023, it was reworked and re-released in February 2024.

Conceptually, it explores the maturation of the individual in the modern world through various stages of life: first, the turbulent, isolated adolescent phase of early identity formation (Identity/Liquid), followed by the stage characterized by a stabilizing sense of self and the development of early adult relationships (Constancy/Vapor), resolving with the gradual folding of the individual into the larger social context at hand as the search for meaning turns outward and upward (Singularity/Spirit). These themes are reflected in the developing instrumentation throughout the movements (solo violin, followed by two violins in duo, followed by a progressively growing string ensemble of indeterminate size), in the qualities of the accompanying soundscapes, and in the harmonic and melodic content within each section.
